MCP vs REST for Hotel Booking: Choosing an Integration

October 12, 2026

Compare MCP and REST for hotel booking: tool discovery, application control, quote handling, secure booking pages, and reservation outcomes.

Choose MCP when a compatible AI client should discover and call hotel tools. Choose REST when your application needs direct control over requests and orchestration. Both surfaces still need current room quotes, guest acceptance, a secure booking flow, and a verified reservation outcome. The protocol choice does not remove those responsibilities.

Stayker Build introduces the hotel booking integration. The 1Stay developer documentation provides the current contracts and access requirements. This guide explains the architectural choice; the complete booking workflow explains the guest journey.

What MCP contributes

The Model Context Protocol defines how clients and servers exchange capabilities and context. For hotel booking, a server can expose tools for finding hotels, retrieving room offers, creating a booking page, and checking reservation status. A compatible client can discover those tools instead of requiring the application to describe each operation from scratch.

MCP does not prescribe how an application uses its language model. It also does not supply inventory or determine whether a hotel reservation succeeded. Those capabilities and results belong to the connected booking service. The official MCP architecture documentation describes this boundary.

Tool discovery is useful, but discovered descriptions are not a substitute for application rules. Your product still needs to decide when to ask for missing dates, how to present a changed offer, and which verified result allows it to say the guest has a reservation.

What REST contributes

A REST integration lets your application call documented endpoints directly and control the sequence itself. That fits a conventional application with its own forms, validation, request lifecycle, and error handling. An AI application can use REST too: its orchestration layer translates the guest's request into the documented API calls.

This flexibility puts the responsibility for defining the model-facing actions and mapping their inputs and outputs in your application. Use the current API documentation rather than assuming that a REST endpoint shares a name, payload, or authentication method with an MCP tool.

A practical decision table

Your application requirement Consider What to validate
A compatible assistant should discover hotel capabilities MCP The actual client supports the documented connection and access flow
Your application owns every request and screen REST Endpoint contracts, authentication, validation, and error handling
A custom agent needs hotel booking Either Your orchestration can preserve quote and reservation state reliably
You support several assistant clients MCP where supported Test each client's actual tool and handoff behavior
You need a completed reservation Either Verify the booking result after the guest completes the secure page

Prefer the surface that matches the application you are building. A second integration surface adds another contract to maintain; add it when there is a concrete product need.

Keep the transaction chain intact

For Stayker's current AI booking workflow, the chain is hotel search, current room details, a secure booking page, and reservation verification. The initial release supports one room per search and reservation. Several independent bookings do not become an atomic multi-room transaction.

Keep the selected hotel, dates, occupancy, rate reference, total, and recorded terms together. A rate from one stay cannot authorize another. If the guest pauses or changes their requirements, follow the service's quote rules and retrieve a usable offer before proceeding. See hotel rate quote expiry for the recovery paths.

The guest supplies identity and payment details on the secure booking page. Do not collect card numbers or security codes in the conversation. A returned booking URL means the page is ready; it does not mean the hotel has confirmed the room.

Handle failure at the right layer

A connection failure, rejected input, expired quote, unavailable room, and uncertain booking outcome need different responses. Classify the result your service actually returned and give the guest the next useful action. Do not turn every failure into a blind retry.

In particular, a timeout after a write does not prove that the write failed. Establish the existing reservation state before attempting another booking. The booking outcome guide explains how to keep uncertainty visible without reporting false success.

Start with the documented path

Review Build and the current 1Stay docs, choose a surface, and test the complete guest journey in the appropriate environment. Check the actual client, current quote handling, secure handoff, and returned reservation status before making booking available to customers.
